Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- Accumulator
- A bet that combines two or more selections into a single wager, where all selections must win for the bet to pay out.
- Asian Handicap
- A point spread that gives a weaker team a head start or a stronger team a deficit, eliminating the draw outcome and leveling the playing field.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money set aside for placing bets, which you manage to avoid spending beyond your means.
- Bet Builder
- A feature that lets you combine multiple outcomes from the same match into a single custom bet, such as goals, cards, and corners.
- Cash Out
- An option to settle a bet before the event ends, letting you take a reduced payout instead of waiting for the final result.
- Double Chance
- A bet that covers two of the three possible outcomes in a match, increasing your chances of winning.
- Draw No Bet
- A bet that eliminates the draw outcome; you win if your chosen team wins, and get your stake back if the match ends in a draw.
- Edge
- An advantage you believe you have over the bookmaker's odds, based on your analysis or information.
- EV
- Expected Value, a measure of how much you can expect to win or lose on a bet on average over time.
- Fixed Odds
- Odds that are set at the time you place a bet and do not change, regardless of later market movements.
- Half-Time/Full-Time
- A bet that predicts both the result at half‑time and the final result of a match, requiring both predictions to be correct.
- In-Play
- Bets placed after an event has started, with odds that update live as the action unfolds.
- Juice
- The commission or fee that a bookmaker adds to the odds, often seen as the price of placing a bet.
- Lay
- To bet against a particular outcome occurring, essentially acting as the bookmaker by offering odds to other bettors.
- Matched Betting
- A technique that uses free bets and odds differences to guarantee a profit by covering all possible outcomes.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether a specific statistic, such as total goals, will be over or under a number set by the bookmaker.
- Parlay
- A bet that links two or more selections; all must win for the bet to pay, offering higher odds but greater risk.
- Point Spread
- A margin set by the bookmaker to equalize the perceived difference between two teams, used in spread betting.
- Prop Bet
- A bet on a specific occurrence within a match, such as the first player to score or the number of yellow cards, independent of the final result.
- Push
- A tie between your bet and the bookmaker's line, resulting in the stake being returned with no win or loss.
- Round Robin
- A series of smaller parlays created from a list of selections, giving multiple chances to win within one bet.
- Stake
- The amount of money you put on a bet, which determines the size of your potential payout.
- Surebet
- A situation where odds across different bookmakers allow you to back all outcomes and secure a profit regardless of the result.
- Underdog
- The team or player expected to lose, often given higher odds to reflect the lower chance of winning.
- Void
- A bet that is cancelled and the stake is refunded, usually because the event did not occur as scheduled.
